Glass bead necklace – carved riroriro and hearts

The birds and hearts on this necklace are carved from coloured window glass which is then tumbled for several days in a stone tumbler, giving it a sea softened appearance. The pieces are then hand plaited on to a brown cord, and fastened with a matching glass toggle. The necklace measures an approximate length of 90 cm, and is designed to hang over the torso area.
The birds depicted are riroriro or grey warbler, tiny birds often present in our garden here in Titirangi, Aotearoa. Their beautiful warbling trill seems to circle in the air; they are often heard but less often seen… a bit mysterious. The hearts on this necklace express aroha or love for the birds and for humans aspiring to live in balance with nature.
